St Barts is often called the Saint-Tropez of the Caribbean, and for good reason: the same families, the same yachts and, more and more, the same names. Our boutique has dressed Saint-Tropez from the Hôtel Byblos for years; this winter we follow our clients to St Barts. Here is how the two compare, and why the answer is often: both.
At a glance
Season: Saint-Tropez from May to early October (peak July–August, the Voiles in late September); St Barts from mid-December to April (peak Christmas and New Year, the Bucket in March, Les Voiles in April). Getting there: Saint-Tropez by road or helicopter from Nice; St Barts by a short flight from St Martin or Guadeloupe, or by ferry from St Martin. Size: Saint-Tropez is a village on a peninsula; St Barts a 25 km² island with Gustavia as its tiny capital. Language and currency: both French, both in euros, though in St Barts English is everywhere and many prices are quoted in dollars.
The beaches
Saint-Tropez has Pampelonne, five kilometres of sand and the most famous beach clubs in Europe. St Barts has fourteen beaches, none of them very long: Saint-Jean for the scene, Gouverneur and Saline for the wild, Colombier by boat or on foot, the lagoon of Grand Cul-de-Sac for families. The water in St Barts is warmer and bluer; the lunches in Saint-Tropez are longer.
The names you will find in both
Bagatelle (Pampelonne and Gustavia harbour), Nikki Beach (Saint-Tropez and Saint-Jean), Loulou (Ramatuelle and, new this season, Shell Beach), Kinugawa (the village and Saint-Jean), Cheval Blanc (St-Tropez and St-Barth Isle de France), Airelles (Château de la Messardière and, from 1 November 2026, Le Guanahani) and Les Voiles (Saint-Tropez in autumn, Saint-Barth in spring). You can follow the same crowd, and the same table, from one to the other.
The style
Saint-Tropez is Riviera glamour: white linen, gold sandals, a dress for Club 55 and another for Les Caves du Roy. St Barts is barefoot chic: the same pieces, worn more lightly, with the sand never far away and a little more sparkle for Gustavia and New Year's Eve. Most of what you wear in Saint-Tropez in August works in St Barts in January. See our St Barts dress code.
